Hot and Cold Rolling:

Hot and Cold Rolling are the process in which metal slabs are passed through rollers as result thickness of the metal slab is reduced and constant and uniform shaped sheet metal is obtained. If temperature of the metal is high then it’s called hot rolling and if it’s low then the process is called cold rolling. Deep drawing of metals through dies are the most common processes used to make complex three dimensional sheet metals that can further be used in aerospace and other industries.

Cutting:

Cutting of sheet metal is done to make various size sheets. Blanking is done for making holes and slots in sheet metal for its further use in appropriate way as like as bending to a certain extent depending upon the user need.

Sheet metals are also joined together according to assembly requirement by some techniques like welding, rivet, adhesive bonding, nut and bolts are some of them used to assemble sheets of different dimensions to make a structure or component.

Grades of Sheet Metals:

Out of numerous amount of available metals here are some metals that can be made into sheet metal, such as aluminum, brass, copper, steel, tin, nickel and titanium.

  • Stainless steel sheet have different grades such as grade 304 used for welding, forming and tackling corrosive environment. Grade 316 for marine applications and Grade 410 for cutlery purpose.
  • Aluminum due to its flexibility and cost effectiveness is used over wide range its Grade 1100-H14 is chemical and weather resistant so it’s used mostly in chemical processing areas and equipment. Grade 3003-H14 is mostly used to make fan propellers, tanks, cabinets, etc. because of its better strength and weldability. Grade 5052-H32 has more strength then other grades of aluminum so it’s used in pressure vessels. Grade 6061-T6 has weak weldability therefore its used in aircrafts joined by riveting.
  • Brass is type of sheet metal that is strong, corrosion resistant and has good conductivity.
